In partnership with Ecotrust, Strategic Earth worked with recreational and commercial fishermen to understand the interactions between coastal and marine human uses and marine protected area (MPA) networks in Southern California. This project will directly inform the 5-year review of recently implemented MPAs in California, which will provide a baseline characterization of the ecological and socioeconomic conditions and changes within the South Coast region of California since MPA implementation in 2012.
Client: Ecotrust/Point 97
Key Results: Inclusion of socioeconomic data in MPA monitoring assessments; Greater participation and understanding of MPA monitoring within the recreational and commercial fishing industries; Improved integration of fishermen’s knowledge in research and monitoring.
