Climate Resilient Fisheries Management: Risks & Rewards Workshop
CLIENT NEED
The Nature Conservancy – Oregon (TNC) is teaming up with Strategic Earth and Kind of Blue LLC to plan and facilitate a two-day interactive workshop. This workshop will bring together fishery managers, scientists, and stakeholders nationwide to collaborate on improving ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) and informing the Fishery Management Council’s Fishery Ecosystem Plan. During the workshop, attendees will discuss the risks and rewards of various tools to build climate-resilient fisheries, such as risk tables and ecosystem indicators, and compare Council approaches and outcomes of EBFM.
STRATEGY
Strategic Earth is working with TNC to design an agenda that balances information exchange, discussion, and relationship-building among participants with diverse areas of expertise. A core strategy is to prioritize the sharing of both well-established and emerging scientific and practical knowledge to inspire attendees to collaboratively develop new ideas. Creating an environment that is inclusive, positive, nonjudgemental, and creative will be essential, and intentionally building in time for strengthening relationships will be key.
KEY RESULTS AND OUTCOMES
Create a space for attendees to engage in information sharing and open collaborative discussions through varied approaches including presentations, small and large group discussions, panel discussions, and flipcharting activities. Attendees will focus on identifying ways to improve data collection and management practices to ensure they are climate resilient as well as communication and collaboration among scientists, managers, and fishing and conservation communities. A key output is a summary report that will be presented to the Pacific Fishery Management Council to share workshop themes, outcomes, and recommendations.
