At Strategic Earth, we recently wrapped up an inspiring project with the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance (NAPSA) as part of the Chimpanzees in Need (CiN) initiative. This effort focused on creating a strategic plan to guide the successful re-homing of captive chimpanzees in accredited and ethical sanctuaries.
Through a series of thoughtfully designed and facilitated strategy sessions, informed by key partner interviews, NAPSA and its partners are co-developing a roadmap that prioritizes the long-term care and well-being of captive chimpanzees.
Highlights and key deliverables of the process included:
- Cross-sector capacity planning sessions to identify shared opportunities.
- Consensus-driven goals and values that deepen alignment across the network.
- Stronger connections between sanctuaries, funders, and advocates to support long-term aspirations.
These efforts have led to a deeper alignment on future aspirations for chimpanzee sanctuary placement, creating a strong foundation for collaboration moving forward.
The draft framework of the strategic plan reflects an adaptive approach to the evolving priorities and needs of sanctuaries, including an increased focus on long-term resource sustainability, expanded partnership opportunities, and refined processes for communication and decision-making across the alliance. Strategic Earth’s role in providing project management, relationship-building, and facilitation support has been instrumental in driving these outcomes and ensuring the project’s overall success.
This project has strengthened NAPSA’s network of sanctuaries, funders, and advocates capacity to envision and implement a future where every chimpanzee can live in sanctuary care, reinforcing the commitment to compassionate and ethical practices for primate welfare.
